Wakulla Spring, in the Woodville Karst Plain of western Florida, discharges an average of 11 m3 s−1 from a large, flooded, conduit. The conduit has been mapped with a computer-controlled underwater sonar mapper which provides extremely detailed wall geometry. The presently incomplete, surveyed length of the cave is 6400 meters with a maximum penetration distance of 5488 meters. Water quality has degraded in recent years and is an environmental issue. The cave is an important paleontological site with extensive recovery of mastodon skeletons.
