Speleogenesis and Evolution of Karst Aquifers

The Journal "Speleogenesis and Evolution of Karst Aquifers" ceased publication with the Issue 12, 2012

Founded in 2003, Speleogenesis was the first online karst and cave science journal, with full open access. In order to increase visibility of significant papers, previously published elsewhere but not available online, the journal published, in addition to original papers, many select papers from other sources.

With years, several other karst and cave science journals (Journal of Cave and Karst Studies, International Journal of Speleology, Acta Carsologica, and some others) adopted open access policy, which was a very welcome development. The model which includes re-publishing does not make sense any more. As this model, and also the lack of an institutional support, precluded progression of the “Speleogenesis” toward the Science Citation Index, the journal faced increasing difficulties in getting quality original papers (which naturally go to journals which do have an impact factor). In appreciation of this situation, the UIS KHS Commission decided after careful deliberation and extensive dialogue during the meeting in Brno (July 2013), to cease the journal publication. We believe that the “Speleogenesis” journal has played an important role in fostering open access publishing in the field and in promoting speleogenetic and broader karst and cave studies, but supporting existing journals which have already received an ISI impact factor or are underway to this goal, is now more useful to the development of our branch of science.

To publish your contributions to karst and cave science, please, consider other journals in the field.
