Glossary of Karst and Cave Terms

permeability, intrinsic
1. A measure of the ability of a medium to transmit a fluid through a porous medium. It is a function of the medium only and is proportional to the mean grain size diameter. 2. A measure of the relative ease with which a porous medium can transmit a fluid under a potential gradient and is a property of the medium alone [22]. 3. The property of a porous medium itself that expresses the ease with which gases, liquids, or other substances can pass through it [22].
