Glossary of Karst and Cave Terms

Any discontinuity within the rock mass that is either initially open or capable of being opened by dissolution to provide a route for water movement. Fissures in this sense, applied generally in karst, therefore include the primary sedimentary bedding planes as well as tectonic faults and joints. More specifically, the term has been used to describe voids with average dimensions from 10 to 100mm [9]. See also conduit; fracture.
