MESSAGE

Those are difficult times for most of us. Many universities and research centers are closed. National Parks and cave and karst sites have been shut. Several conferences have been postponed or cancelled. Many of our KC members are working from home. The worldwide fight against Covid-19 will enter a critical phase and sadly, it will get worse before it gets better.

On a positive note we received news that our Chinese karst colleagues are well and normal life is slowly being resumed in China.

Due to these extraordinary circunstances we will stop temporarily to announce conferences. Some have been cancelled (EGU 2020, KC Geotrip), postponed (UNESCO Karst 2020), or are in "pause" mode (Karstological School). There are large uncertainties related to most of them. We will wait for the situation to become clear. Please follow the updates on each conference's website.

Let's hope things will improve soon and meanwhile protect yourselves and your loved ones.

UNESCO KARST 2020 POSTPONED

The organizers of the UNESCO Karst 2020, the official meeting of the Karst Commission in 2020, have announced that the meeting has been postponed to August 17-21. Due to the fluidity of the situation please keep an eye on the conference website at:  [https://unescokarst2020.com/] for updates.

Our Geotrip, a Karst Commission event that was going to take place in Yellowstone National Park immediately before the conference, has been cancelled.

KARST COMMISSION NEW MEMBER

Please welcome our new member, Dr. Pu Junbing. He is a karst scientist and full professor from the Institute of Karst Geology and the International Research Center on Karst, Guilin, China.

WoKaS PAPER PUBLISHED

The World Karst Spring Hydrograph database (WoKaS) paper has now been published in Nature Scientific Data. It can be accessed at:  [https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-019-0346-5]

This important study presents a compilation of over 400 hydrographs from springs around the world, contributed by 60 authors, many of them members of our commission. The research was supported by the Karst Commission and was led by Tunde Olarinoye and Andreas Hartmann.

There is also a very nice short report written by Tunde at:  [follow this link]

EGU EARLY CAREER AWARD TO ANDREAS HARTMANN

Our member Andreas Hartmann from the Chair of Hydrological Modelling and Water Resources at the University of Freiburg, Germany, will be honored with the Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Early Career Scientists 2020. The European Geosciences Union (EGU) recognizes scientific achievements of young scientists in the entire spectrum of geosciences.

There is a press release with further details at:  [follow this link].

Congratulations to Andreas, one of our most active members.

FUTURE AND FRONTIERS OF HYDROGEOLOGY

IAH has sent a call to all commissions regarding an initiative for writing a paper (or a series of papers) in the general theme "Future and Frontiers of Hydrogeology". IAH has set a working group who is organizing the submissions, pre-reviewing papers submitted, and will help coordinate which papers will be submitted to each journal, etc. If you are interested please contact Dave Kreamer at  [This email address is being protected from spambots. PhD POSITION IN KARST HYDROGEOLOGY

There is an open job announcement for a PhD position in karst hydrogeology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, under our members Nico Goldscheider and Nadine Goeppert. Details can be found at:  follow this link
