The International Scientific- practical Conference “PROTECTED KARST TERRITORIES – MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT” will be held on 16-20 September 2012 in Shumen, Bulgaria.

This Conference is under the auspices of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and is dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the famous Bulgarian Geographer and Karst specialist Vladimir Popov.

The Conference is expected to be a forum of outstanding researchers and administrators of protected karst areas worldwide. The organizers expect high-level professional discussions concerning topical issues of research and management of protected karst areas and their role in teaching about karst. Special emphasis will be the concept of Karst geosystems and the need for comprehensive monitoring of karst areas. These aspects are particularly important given the global changes and their regional and local impacts on karst regions and problems of risk management in karst environment.

The working languages will be Bulgarian, Russian and English. The deadline for abstracts is May 31, 2012. Registration of participants starts from June 15, 2012. After the Conference a scientific excursion is organized (21-24 September 2012) to natural landmarks and historical monuments in karst areas of Northern Bulgaria.
